Here are a list of excellent Zencart modules that are basically essential for all Zencart installations:
- ImageHandler 2 resizes your product images to the actual display size that is specified in your Admin settings. This greatly improves the performance of you website by reducing the file size of product image. Gives you the opportunity to automatically watermark all product images for all sizes. In additon, it offers a includes a nice zoom effect for small product images that shows when a customer moves the mouse pointer over the image.
- Zen LightBox adds lightbox support to Zencart. Large product image are shown in an overlay. This eliminates the need for popup windows and makes your website much more user friendly.
- Simple SEO URL ( requires Module Manager) is a free Url optimization module for Zencart. It changes dynamic URLs to static and well-structured SEO friendly formats, allows store owners to customize the stores’ urls to make them more user-friendly.
- XMLSitemap creates sitemaps for your website that can be included in the robots.txt file. This helps search engines to find all websites, speeds-up the crawling process and gives your the opportunity to give different priorities to your websites. Read mroe about Sitemaps at Google.

I have these plugins installed on my Zencart website at www.Qacaq.com. They are save to use for version 1.3.8a and work without problems. I have tried other plugins, but ran in a lot of trouble because they do not work properly with my version. And it is very hard to remove plugins most plugins because they add files in many different directories. Therefore, my advice is to try new plugins first on a test Zencart installation, identical to your live website and deploy them only after you have tested you functionality before. Examples of problem plugins that I have personally tried are Cross Selling and Advanced Cross Selling, Easy Signup and Easy Checkout (works fine except that the new signup process prevents welcome email to be send to new customers). Especially, be caution when a plugin was not updated for a very long time and check the support forum if there is active support in case there are problems. And there are always problems!
Look in the Zencart support forums when you have trouble using any of the above plugins or leave a comment. I do my best to help you to get it up and running.

I would like to share my experiences, problems, tips and best practices on this blog, which I have gathered during the creation, hosting and constant updates of my shopping website www.Qacaq.com. Qacaq.com sells handmade jewelry in Malaysia. Have a look! The website was built using the open source shopping cart Zencart and is currently hosted with Hostmonster.com. My impression so far is that it is a really good shopping cart software with many active installations and a lot of support from a large community. The software is written in PHP, which makes it very easy to host. I can recommend my current hosting provider Hostmonster.com. Its reliable, reasonable fast and offers a very good price.
The main work that is required to get your own website up and running is the customisation of your own look and feel. Even though there are different templates (free and commercial) for Zencart available. If you would like to have a look at the available templates, visit ZenCartTemplates.info for a nice collection of free templates and TemplateMonster.com for a large collection of commercial templates. Both provide live demonstration feature, where you can a running shop with the templates.
I can recommend the free templates but not necessarily the commercial ones. Even though, I haven’t bought any commercial template, I did not get to install the free demo template that was provided. In addition, it is not recommended by the Zencart developer team. If there is a lot of trouble using some fancy template that the probably do not install for you, think about it twice. It maybe work when you install it, but you may have a lot of trouble with the large amount of free plugins for Zencart or updates in the future.
